Limb Care for Enhanced Living

Limb Care for Enhanced Living

Your prosthesis was an investment financially, physically, and mentally. From preparing for and attending fittings for your prosthesis to learning how to use your new limb, you have worked hard. Good limb care — regular maintenance of your residual limb and the equipment accompanying your prosthetic device — will ensure your hard work pays off with healthy skin and a liner to use for years to come.

Developing a care routine for the evening is a good idea, especially for those who need to prepare for work or school in the morning. It is suggested that amputees shower at night, as hot water can cause the residual limb to swell. This makes putting on a prosthesis more difficult after a warm shower.

Residual Limb Care

After showering, clean the residual limb with warm water and mild soap. Use a washcloth and scrub softly, paying extra attention to the back of your knees and the bottom of your limb. Apply the moisturizer recommended by your Human Technology prosthetist before going to bed.

During this time, inspect all parts of your limb with a mirror. The skin around your residual limb is fragile, and you should inform your prosthetist of sores, wounds, or other skin abrasions visible.

If you encounter pain or notice rashes, bruises, open wounds, blisters, or sores on your residual limb skin, visit your Human Technology prosthetist or physician immediately. It’s possible your prosthesis needs adjusting and it’s best to address the situation as soon as possible.

Liner Upkeep

In addition to cleaning your residual limb daily, also clean your liner. It is best to turn the liner inside out, wash it with mild soap, dry it, and return it to its original form. The liner should be hung overnight to dry completely.

Keeping Prosthetics Dry

While your residual limb and liner can get wet, keep your prosthesis dry. Most prostheses will not be harmed by a periodic splash, but do not submerge them in water unless fabricated for showering or swimming. If your prosthesis accidentally gets wet, dry it quickly.
