HIP DISARTICULATION / HEMIPELVECTOMY AMPUTEES

Patients who have undergone hip disarticulation or hemipelvectomy surgical procedures can face several challenges, physical and emotional. Because the procedures involve amputation high up at the hip and pelvis, mobility and independence can be impacted. There can be an increase in the risk of chronic pain and skin complications especially if poor circulation, diabetes, and/or vascular disease are indicated.

HIP DISARTICULATION

The lower limb is surgically removed through the hip joint, the pelvis is left intact. This procedure preserves the ischium, the bone that supports weight and allows sitting.

HEMIPELVECTOMY

The entire lower limb is removed, along with a portion of the pelvis. The ischium is removed on one side of the pelvis, the amputee is required to shift their weight to the other side.

Prosthetic fittings can restore mobility and independence for both types of patients with these amputations. A supportive rehab team of doctors, nurses, physical therapy, and your prosthetist are key for this lengthy process. The prosthetic components include a custom fabricated socket, a suspension system, a knee, and foot. Human Technologies practitioners will work with its hemipelvectomy and hip disarticulation patients to fit a comfortable and functional prosthetic limb.
