Amputee Skin Care

Amputee Skin Care

Appropriate skin care is necessary for everyone. For those who wear a prosthesis, a daily skin cleaning regimen assists in preventing disabling skin conditions and facilitates a regular, energetic life. Blending regular cleansing with medicated soaps and anti-bacterial lotions will provide skin with the necessary protection to remain healthy. Learn more about amputee skin care below.

The Residual Limb

It is best to clean the residual limb at the day’s conclusion since damp skin inserted in a socket is more likely to swell and become inflamed. Follow these steps when sanitizing the residual limb:

  • Wash with warm water and a medicated lotion soap.
  • Rinse completely, as soap film may cause skin soreness.
  • Dry totally.
  • Apply a medicated skin lotion or cream to maintain supple skin. Utilizing softening lotion regularly reduces the forming of abrasions, calluses, and extreme skin toughening.

Sockets

Clean sockets frequently.

  • Wash with warm water and mild soap.
  • Wipe with a cloth moistened in clean water.
  • Dry thoroughly before putting it on, as dampness may cause the skin to stick, rub, and become aggravated.

Socks and Liners

  • Use mild soap and warm water to wash anything that comes into contact with the skin.
  • Rinse fully and dry.
